Is the Frome Share Shop Waking Up Again?

Here’s What We Know…

If you’ve been missing the much-loved Share Shop — the place where you could borrow everything from drills and tents to pasta machines and party games — there’s finally some hopeful news. After pressing pause last year, the team behind the project are quietly working away behind the scenes on a plan to bring it back to life in Frome.

At a recent town council meeting, Share Shop trustee and local councillor Anne Hills gave an encouraging update. The group are exploring a few different routes to get the service up and running again — or as she put it, “gently coaxing it out of hibernation.”

A new way of sharing?

One idea on the table is a more flexible, spread-out model. Instead of everything living in one building, different types of items could be kept in different spots around town. It would mean a smaller, slower restart — but one that’s easier to manage and could get the borrowing system back into the community sooner rather than later.

Still searching for a new home

The original site on The Bridge — where the Share Shop operated happily for nine years — closed last summer after Halifax vacated the building. Since then, the team have been looking for a new home that makes both practical and financial sense.

In the meantime, there’s been a stroke of good fortune: the new owner of the former premises has kindly allowed the Share Shop to keep its stock stored there while the future is worked out. They even have a few months’ grace once the sale fully completes — a huge help, especially as shifting hundreds of items twice would be costly, time-consuming, and frankly, a logistical nightmare!

What happens next?

Nothing is confirmed yet, but the energy and determination are definitely there. With several ideas being explored and the community’s enthusiasm behind them, it feels like the Share Shop may well return in a refreshed form.

As always, we’ll keep you posted as soon as there’s more news. Frome loves a good bit of sharing — and we know so many people will be thrilled to see the return of this brilliant local resource.
