Low in iron? It's time to forage for some stinging nettles!

Updated: 5 days ago

Did you know that nettles are an excellent source of iron (twice as much as spinach) and vitamin C? Not only is vitamin C a powerful boost to the immune system, but it also helps the body absorb iron. So if you too, struggle with iron deficiency, below is a simple, quick, and inexpensive nettle recipe.

Plus, nettle leaves also serve as an excellent source of calcium and various minerals, which may contribute to the reduction of inflammation and other serious health conditions. However, it is important that people with existing conditions and those who take certain medications speak with a healthcare professional before trying nettles. This includes people who take diuretics and blood pressure medication, as well as children under the age of twelve.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • A small bouquet of fresh nettle leaves

  • Raspberries (or any other berries)

  • Half a banana

  • Apple juice

Rinse the nettle plants under running water or soak them in a bowl. Blend the clean nettle leaves with half a banana, a handful of raspberries and some apple juice. (I usually pre-measure it all in a glass and then transfer it to the blender.) Blend until you get a smooth mixture.

Et voilà!
