SS&L, Somerset’s only Community Interest Company delivering apprenticeships, is celebrating a standout year following the release of the latest national data for 2024/25.
The figures speak for themselves. SS&L has achieved the highest apprenticeship achievement rate in Somerset at 72%, alongside an impressive 100% pass rate for all learners.
Well Above National Averages
To put that into context, typical apprenticeship achievement rates across England sit at around 54–56%, with pass rates usually in the mid-to-high 90s.
SS&L’s results place them comfortably above these benchmarks, highlighting the strength of their approach and the outcomes they’re delivering for learners across Somerset and the South West.
A Different Approach to Learning
As the only CIC (Community Interest Company) training provider in Somerset, SS&L does things a little differently.
Their focus is firmly on the individual, with an inclusive, learner-centred approach designed to remove barriers, build confidence, and support people into meaningful careers.
Justin Speirs, Director of Curriculum at SS&L, said:
“We are incredibly proud to see our learners achieve such fantastic results. As the only CIC training provider in Somerset, we take a bold, inclusive approach to learning that champions every learner. These figures reflect the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our learners, and the strength of our partnerships with employers.”
Small, Focused, and Impactful
Despite being smaller than many colleges and national providers, SS&L believes this is part of their strength.
Kathryn Baker, CEO of SS&L, added:
“We may be smaller than many colleges and national providers, but our focus is on quality. By keeping learners at the heart of everything we do, we can deliver outstanding outcomes and make a real difference to people’s careers and lives.”

Supporting Somerset’s Workforce
From its Somerset base, SS&L works closely with employers, communities, and partners across the South West to deliver training that is accessible, relevant, and aligned with local workforce needs.
Their work spans apprenticeships, adult learning, and courses for young people, all designed to create opportunities and strengthen the local economy.
