Who Books Lily Allen for a Wedding Anniversary?

June has been one of those months that reminds me life sometimes has a wicked sense of humour.
As I write this, we’re packing for France to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Thirty years! There have been highs, lows and plenty of plot twists along the way, so it seemed entirely appropriate that our anniversary treat was…Lily Allen.
Now, if you’ve heard the album, West End Girl, you’ll know it’s less of a romantic love letter and more of a soundtrack to the spectacular collapse of a marriage. We spent most of the evening singing along to break up songs while quietly hoping it wasn’t some sort of omen. Thankfully, we made it home still speaking to each other and are now looking forward to celebrating with friends and family in France.

Truth be told, after everything we’ve been through over the past few months, reaching 30 years together feels like something worth celebrating. Marriage isn’t about never having difficult times. It’s about finding someone who’s still there at the end of them. I got lucky.

Before packing the suitcases, though, we’ve been busy putting together another episode of the When in Frome podcast, and this month’s title, The Inside Scoop, turned out to be rather fitting.
There were actual scoops involved as Sonia tackled a mystery ice cream challenge, bravely attempting to identify some rather unusual flavours. I won’t spoil how she got on, but let’s just say some were easier than others!

We also spent time at Frome Pride, one of those events that reminds me what a wonderfully welcoming town we live in. There was colour, music, dancing and a real sense of community, with people of all ages coming together to celebrate inclusion and simply enjoy being themselves.

Festival season is well and truly underway too. We caught up with the team behind Frome Festival and discovered the Writers in Residence competition, where local writers take over shops and cafés for the day, inspired by a creative writing prompt and their surroundings. It’s exactly the sort of wonderfully bonkers idea that makes Frome…well, Frome.

Our Local Legend this month is Tony Perry from The Bridge. Meeting people like Tony is one of my favourite parts of making the podcast. He’d probably be the first to shrug off the praise, but his quiet kindness and dedication have made an extraordinary difference to so many people in Frome.

We also visited Vallis Farm, where inspiring workshops are helping people reconnect with nature, creativity and wellbeing. It’s another reminder that sometimes the best ideas are also the simplest.

Looking back over the month, there’s a common thread running through it all. Whether it’s celebrating 30 years of marriage, dancing at Pride, tasting mystery ice cream or discovering hidden pockets of creativity, it’s the people who make every experience memorable.
So, if you’re looking for a little colour, creativity and perhaps even the odd scoop this summer, do have a listen to the podcast. And if you know someone who deserves to be our next Local Legend, we’d love to hear from you.
As for us, we’re off to France. Here’s hoping the soundtrack to the next chapter of our marriage is a little less Lily Allen and a little more La Vie en Rose.
